The below photos were taken on December 1st as a very strong cold front passed through our location. The storm brought thunder, lightning, big rain ,and a 30 degree temperature change. The skies were extremely dramatic which is not truly represented in the below photos.

John O’Leary texted us a photo of this year’s first snow.

On August 22, 2019 we partnered with our friends at Hospice of the Valley to honor the many members who bravely served our country. Eleven veteran members were awarded with pins, certificates, flags and plaques. This event was cosponsored by the DAV and Marine Corps League Veteran Volunteers who presented a formal flag ceremony that included “Taps.” Members also enjoyed special music by Bill Costas and Bob Ochtyun. Bill Costas closed our ceremony with an especially beautiful folk rendition of John Newton’s “Amazing Grace.” Many of our members and guests had tears in their eyes including me!

Boaters’ Education Class given by Mosquito Lake Squadron

Location – The Cortland Conservation Club, 3931 McCleary Jacoby Road, Cortland, OH 44410
Dates – March 11, 14, 18, 20, 25 and 27, 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Materials Fee – $35

Mandatory boater education and an Ohio Boating Safety Certificate are required for any person born on or after January 1, 1982, who operates a watercraft of greater than 10 horsepower.

Please join us in welcoming Colonel Sarachene to The Cortland Conservation Club. Colonel Sarachene will be attending our Membership Meeting and providing our members with a mission briefing at 8 PM. Coffee and cake will be served after our meeting.

From Colonel Sarachene’s Biography: “Colonel Sarachene is the commander of the 910th Airlift Wing, Youngstown Air Reserve Station. As the wing commander, he is responsible for the overall combat readiness of fourteen subordinate units with more than 1,300 assigned personnel and eight assigned C-130H Hercules tactical cargo transport aircraft. He is also responsible for maintaining the Department of Defense’s only large area, fixed-wing aerial spray capability to control disease-carrying insects, pest insects and undesirable vegetation and to disperse oil spills in large bodies of water.”

Our first Wednesday Night Supper Club was a blast. A great time was had by all. Our friends shared everything from fried chicken to tacos to steak. In addition to all of the culinary delights, we danced, played musical games and received dobro lessons (a fancy slide guitar). Special thanks to the Henderson’s for their wonderful music.

We look forward to seeing all our friends at next month’s Wednesday Night Supper Club (July 11th).

Groundskeeper Willie would like to remind all of our members to PLEASE MOW UNDER YOUR TRAILERS.

Per our Member’s Handbook

(G4) – Member is responsible for grounds-keeping of assigned parking space. Grass exceeding 6″ will be mowed and the member assessed $35.00 per mowing.

Groundskeeper Willie is a new Club hire (replacing Groundskeeper Gus). Willie comes to us after retiring from Springfield High, where he served as custodian and groundskeeper. Willie was born in Scotland and can be difficult at times to understand.

We have a new friend at The Cortland Conservation Club…

We have a family of Osprey that are nesting in our tennis court light (SW corner). After speaking to ODNR, we were informed that the Osprey would complete their nesting in around 60 days (by mid-July. In the meantime, you should go about your regular business. So not to disturb our nesting friends, we have temporarily turned of the SW tennis court light.

Large Raptor
Common Names are sea hawk, river hawk and fish hawk.
Reaches more than 24 inches in in length and 71 inches across the wings.
Diet consists almost exclusively of fish and small children.
Several adaptations that suit its piscivorous lifestyle, including reversible outer toes and closable nostrils.
Better fisherman than Marty.

Membership Meeting – Thursday, April 26th at 7:30 PM

We are pleased to announce that our very own James Orsine will be presenting an abbreviated “Safe Boating” seminar at our upcoming Membership Meeting. Coffee and cake will be served after our meeting. If you don’t know Jim, he is an active member in the United States Power Squadron and has been a member of The Cortland Conservation Club since 1988. We look forward to Jim’s presentation.
